On November 2-5, 2017 the team of Law Faculty at Polotsk State University for the first time took part in the IInd International competition for mediation and negotiations «Mediation of the future» (Minsk, Belarus).
Mediation is one of the key technologies for the alternative dispute resolution. It implies confidential negotiations between disputing parties with the participation of a neutral third party – a mediator – in resolving conflicts through the use of specialized communication and negotiation techniques.
The competition was organized by the International Law and Arbitration Association (BILA Association) and the Centre for mediation and negotiations (Minsk).
The following teams were represented at the competition:
- Academy of Public Administration under the aegis of the President of the Republic of Belarus;
- Belarusian State Agricultural Academy;
- Belarusian State University;
- Belarusian State Economic University;
- Brest State University named after A.S. Pushkin;
- Vitebsk State University named after P.M. Masherov;
- Vitebsk branch of the International University MITSO;
- Russian Foreign Trade Academy (Moscow);
- Gomel State University named after F. Skaryna;
- Far Eastern Federal University (Vladivostok);
- International University MITSO (Minsk);
- Moscow State University of Psychology and Education;
- Higher School of Economics (Moscow);
- Teams from Kyrgyz Russian Slavic University and Kyrgyz National University (Bishkek);
- Polotsk State University;
- Russian State Social University (Moscow);
- Russian State University of Justice (Moscow);
- Saint Petersburg State University.
Polotsk State University was represented by Roman Volkov and Anastasia Olikhver – third-year students of the Faculty of Law (supervisor – Pavel Solovyev, a senior teacher of the Department of Theory and History of State and Law).
The competition was conducted in the form of a business game in which teams had an opportunity to resolve conflicts with the help of mediation techniques. The jury of the competition was represented by the international mediators, lawyers, specialists from the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus, Russia and the United Kingdom.
According to the results of the competition the team of the Faculty of Law at PSU has been included in the top 6 teams and has become a semi-finalist of the competition. Roman Volkov was awarded with a certificate in the nomination «Best speaker».
The team of our university got priceless experience during the participation in the international competition and professional knowledge during the training workshop with Amos Gabriel – an international commercial mediator, lawyer, arbiter, diplomat, also a mediator for resolving conflicts in such companies as Goldman Sachs vs GP, Morgan Bank, Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Office Depot. and others.
