On November, 15, 2016 the Director of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Right and Humanitarian Law (Lund, Sweden) Morten Kjaerum and the Director of Europe Office of this university Amelie Sallfors.

Visit of Director of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute to PSU

The Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Right and Humanitarian Law was founded in 1984 and affiliated with Lund University. The university is named after Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat which is famous for his humanitarian work in Hungary at the end of the Second World War. The mission of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute is to promote universal respect for human rights and humanitarian law by means of research, academic education and institutional development.

For achieving the aims the Raoul Wallenberg Institute cooperates with various research and educational establishments, international organizations, government organizations from all over the world. Law faculty of Polotsk State University is also in the list of reliable partners of the Institute.

The visit of Morten Kjaerum and Amelie Sallfors to PSU started with the excursion in Mezhdurechye and meeting with the academic staff of Law faculty. Swedish and Belarusian colleagues considered the results of their cooperation for the past 2 years and discussed further plans.

The Swedish guests also had a meeting with rector of PSU Dmitry Lazovsky. As a result both sides signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which opens new horizons for the cooperation between Raoul Wallenberg Institute and PSU.

Morten Kjaerum and the dean of Law faculty Irina V. Vegera shared their opinions about the importance of the Memorandum of Understanding and the perspectives of further cooperation between Raoul Wallenberg Institute and PSU.

Morten Kjaerum: «We’ve just signed the Agreement with the rector of PSU. I’m very glad about it! This document will be the foundation for further development of our cooperation with Law faculty.

The Agreement is mainly about the education and preparation in the field of human rights, the exchange of research results and activation of joint research work, student exchange. This document will provide widening of specific socially oriented activity of Law faculty. Thus, we cooperate in the field of scientific research, education and professional preparation, socially oriented programmes. We hope that this Agreement will help us to activate our joint work in different directions.

During the meeting with the rector of PSU we’ve also discussed the opportunities of broadening of our cooperation. I know that the tendency to use interdisciplinary approach is one of distinguishing features of your university. It is definitely relevant. Using of interdisciplinary approach in human rights learning will help us to involve the number of other scientific fields. I’m looking forward to continue our cooperation».

I.V. Vegera: «The academic cooperation of Law faculty and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Right and Humanitarian Law started in 2014. The academic staff of Law faculty of Polotsk State University has regularly taken part in all events that has been carried out by the Institute together with university-partners from Minsk (international conferences, seminars, workshops). We have been involved in the research activity connected with the implementation of the aspects of human rights in juridical disciplines, gender equality and some other directions.

Together with our Swedish partners several study visits have been organized. In 2014 we visited the Raoul Wallenberg Institute and this year – the universities of Madrid and Valencia. In 2014 and 2015 the representative of the Institute, doctor of Juridical Science Alejandro Fuentes held several lectures in English for students of Law faculty at PSU. Last year he helped to organize the seminar of methods of teaching human rights in the English language. In 2015 we published a tutorial «Human rights» together with Swedish researchers. This summer two students of Law faculty have had an internship in the Institute. We also have the cooperation between our libraries.

The visit of Raoul Wallenberg Institute representatives Morten Kjaerum and Amelie Sallfors to the Republic of Belarus and, particularly, to Polotsk State University is a very important event for the development of our bilateral cooperation».
