From June 20 to July 6, second-year Architecture and Civil Engineering students from Euphrosyne Polotskaya State University of Polotsk took part in an academic exchange programme.
The intensive training took place at Zhejiang Shuren University in Hangzhou, China. Over two weeks, future engineers and architects explored both cutting-edge technologies and centuries-old traditions, giving them a completely new perspective on the construction industry.
The Belarusian students worked in modern university labs. They showcased their skills in assembling complex steel structures and learned how to use simulation software and operate drones.
The hands-on experience was enriched by learning about eco-friendly construction. Visiting buildings made of bamboo – a material currently experiencing a renaissance in global architecture – helped students rethink how renewable resources can be used in large-scale projects.
The organizers also focused on "smart" city concepts and industrial heritage. Visits to the Hangzhou Grand Canal Metallurgical Park and the headquarters of tech giant Huawei showed the students how innovations are integrated into urban environments, transforming the look of modern cities.
An equally important part of the trip was exploring the local culture. A visit to Yucun Village, a symbol of ecological renewal, and tours of museums featuring traditional Chinese fans, swords, and scissors helped the students see the strong connection between traditional crafts and technical progress. This cultural exchange, along with lively conversations with Chinese students, laid the groundwork for friendships and professional contacts that will undoubtedly support their future careers
The internship concluded with a certificate awarding ceremony. The Polotsk University students expressed their gratitude to their Chinese colleagues:
Darya Pushkareva, 2nd-year Civil Engineering student: "I would like to thank the teachers and student volunteers for their patience and understanding over these two weeks. I also want to thank my classmates, with whom we learned so much not only about Chinese culture but also about each other".
Polina Skurat, 2nd-year Civil Engineering student: "Two weeks at Zhejiang Shuren University flew by in a flash, but these days left a huge mark on my heart. I came here for knowledge, but I got so much more. I was amazed not only by the quality of the studies and the programme, but also by the atmosphere. I really loved the amazing connection between people. Here, I realized that despite cultural and language differences, we have much more in common: we all want to learn, grow, and become better. I loved how you treat each other and your guests – with genuine warmth, respect, and openness. Thanks to this exchange of experience between our peoples, I felt that we are not just students from different countries, but one big team.
The biggest discovery for me was that being around you made me want to study even harder. The programme, the approach to education, and your energy inspired me to achieve new things. I want to say a huge thank you for this priceless experience. I am taking home not just knowledge, but also friends and the warmest memories. I hope our communication continues and we will see each other again – maybe even in Belarus".
Polina Ivanova, 2nd-year Civil Engineering student: "I would like to thank the teachers and student volunteers who made these two weeks unforgettable. For me, it was a completely new experience that brought not only bright emotions but also unique knowledge. It was fascinating to learn about bamboo construction – and so much more – and I loved every minute of it! A huge thank you for your help, patience, and warmth".
The academic exchange programme at Zhejiang Shuren University proved that borders are just a formality when it comes to professional growth and sharing knowledge. Polotsk University will continue to actively develop its international partnerships, creating opportunities for its students that inspire new achievements and lay a solid foundation for future large-scale global projects..
