What do modern youth do on Friday evenings? Right, they play board games at English Speaking Club. What’s more, they chat in English with the native speakers. Of course, if they are lucky to study at the Centre for Foreign Languages Study at Polotsk State University.
Board games are very popular now. They offer the scope for communication and the lecturers couldn’t but use this opportunity. Moreover, Jocelyn Pihlaja provided 5 modern board games in English.
The speaking club meeting was organized differently this time. The participants were divided into teams to play each of the five games. The teachers, Jocelyn Pihlaja and Alana Felton, the guests from America, were the moderators of the games. The diversity of countries was noticeable not only among the moderators, but also among the students. The games united the representatives from Turkmenistan, Nigeria and Belarus.
The teams were offered various tasks. From explaining the word written on a card to building a word out of the letters given. The moderators issued the challenge in the way that each member of a team could actively participate in the game and had the chance to practice English.
The atmosphere was so warm and friendly and the teams were so occupied with playing that the meeting lasted for two hours instead of an hour and a half. However, even then the participants didn’t want to finish the meeting. The Head of the Centre, Olga Zhuravskaya, promised that the meetings of the kind would become regular: “Everybody who came today were excited about Jocelyn’s idea. As the games are at our disposal now, we will definitely use them not only during the club meetings, but also at the lessons and other events organized by the Centre.”
We would like to remind you that you can learn about the club meetings beforehand in our group VKontakte. Since December 2018, any person, even not a student of the Centre, will have the opportunity to attend the meetings.
