On November 20-22, 2018, the IV Annual All-Russian Architectural Competition for Students’ Works "Universal Design" was held in Moscow. The organizer of the event was Russian Disability NGO "Perspektiva" supported by Ministry of Education and Science of Russia and Committee for Architecture and Urban Planning of Moscow City. The aim was to create comfortable urban environment for the people with impaired mobility. The participants were offered to design urban environment taking into account the aim.

This competition offers young specialists an opportunity to demonstrate their projects on creating a barrier-free environment implement the project and thus make urban environment more comfortable, and simple.

There were the following nominations:

  • Parks and urban environment adaptation;
  • Residential units;
  • Health-related institutions;
  • Educational institutions;
  • Public facilities;
  • Object design;
  • Sports facilities;
  • Transport nodes.

There were two stages: a qualifying round and a final one. The best projects were chosen by the jury that was represented by:

  • Denis Rosa Michael (Chairman of Russian Disability NGO “Perspektiva”, Director of the Fund “Best Buddies”, Chairman of the Organizing Committee at Film Festival «Breaking Down Barriers», a public figure, “New Intelligentsia” award holder, the co-founder of Business Advisory Board on Disability);
  • Finn Petren (President of Design for All Sverige, a member of European expert group on accessibility during 1985-2004, Ambassador of “Design for Europe” during 2015-2018, President of EIDD Design during 2007-2013, developed UN standards and rules on equal opportunities for people with disabilities, international consultant);
  • Iviya Barda (Chairman of the Baltic Architecture Center Board, manager of the public organization “ES REDZU”,  Union of Architects of Russia in Latvia Chairman);
  • Nikolay Lyutomsky (Experts council member of the Best Building Awards, Chief Project Architect, founder and Director of the “AB ELIS”, USSR Architects Union prize holder, has a State Prize of Russia in the field of architecture, a title "Architect of the Year” and Moscow City Hall Prize in Architecture);
  • Marat Ka (decorator, designer, architect, television host, interior decoration technology innovator, author of methodological and popular science publications on the theory and practice of decoration, the original color coordinate system and universal approach to the design of interiors creator);
  • Ilya Mukosey (architect, Architecture Studio PlanAR partner, Moscow Architects member, ARCHIWOOD,  “12 Bashen”, DIA and etc. prize holder, lecturer at the “STRELKA” institute in 2010-2011 and at MARCH Architecture School during 2014-2015);
  • Vera Osinovskaya (Deputy Head of the Department for Monitoring Compliance with Objects and Services Accessibility Requirements for Persons with Disabilities of the Control and Accounting Services of the Department of Labor and Social Protection of Moscow population, author of 5 manuals, co-author of 2 sets of rules соавтор 2-х сводов правил);
  • Kirill Tesler (PhD in Architecture, Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture at Moscow State (National Research) University of Civil Engineering, Head of the Architectural Bureau “Vector”);
  • Sergey  Glubokin (Deputy Head of the Architectural Council);
  • Aleksey Komov (Head of the “А2:К” Workshop, prize holder and regular participant of Russian and international architectural competitions, Union of Architects of Russia member, author of current analytical articles in professional publications “Project-Russia”, and “ProjectInternational”);

75 projects of participating teams were presented at the competition. Only a half of them came through to the final. Among them was a project created by our 4th-year student specializing in “ArchitectureAnastasiya Yemelyanova. Besides, she was the only Belarusian representative at the competition.

The authors who came through to the final were invited to present their projects publicly, visit an exhibition, take part in master-classes and a solemn ceremony of declaring the winners and attend lectures in the sphere of universal design.

Anastasiya presented the project “Multi-apartment Residential Building” in the nomination “Residential Units”. Moreover, her project evoked great interest on the half of the jury.

Yekaterina Orlovskaya, Assistant at the Department of Architecture at Polotsk State University, was the event curator. She does her scientific research under academic supervision of Alexander Matviyenko, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Economics.

On the last day, all the results were presented and all the winners were awarded prizes at the solemn closing ceremony. Anastasiya’s project took an honorable 2nd place. Absence of winners in some nominations proves that A. Yemelyanova’s project high level and its significance.
