Information technologies are constantly developing and changing our lives. We are sharing personal information every day without even thinking how its security is provided. In an age of abundance of information, information security plays the most important role. Any leak can cause huge financial losses at any organization. That’s why the course in “Computer Security” at the Faculty of Information Technologies is gaining more and more popularity.

Nowadays, major companies are willing to invest much money in their personal information protection and computer security. The world needs specialists to protect the information system from hackers.

Such problems can’t be solved by the graduates of related specialities. Programmers’ knowledge and skills in system and applied programming is not enough to deal with this task. Mathematicians and physicists lack knowledge in programming. And this is the special thing about this study programme: computer security is the field where the programmers and mathematicians join the forces.

The graduates of the “Computer Security” speciality are “Versatile IT-specialists”. They are trained both in programming, information security and math. The training allows them to work in completely different fields. Most people are mistaken when considering the students of the specialty some ordinary programmers. Software engineers are trained to fix problems and information security specialists are trained to find and analyse what causes these problems. This is the main difference between them according to Arina Tanana’s opinion. Arina Tanana, a 4th-year student of Computer Security speciality and a Presidential scholarship holder says: “Our specialty is characterized by an in-depth mathematical training on the basis of which we study programming and information security. That’s why we are versatile IT-specialists”.

Arina Tanana

Arina Tanana chose the “Computer Security” speciality for she was looking for a mathematical direction: “There were three places where I could go: Minsk, Grodno and Polotsk. Polotsk is the closest one to my home, so I chose PSU. And I didn’t regret even a bit. Our faculty and the university as a whole allow to improve yourself not only as a specialist but also as a person. There is a possibility to show your talents and receive communication skills to forge relationships with colleagues which is just as important. Now I can say with confidence that taking a course in Computer Security provides a huge chance to become a good developer and be competitive in the IT market".

In a Computer Class

Computer Security is one of the specialities at the Faculty of Information Technologies. The students study in the buildings of Polotsk College, which is also called a museum. This university building exists since 1581 and is a prominent landmark not only for Polotsk, but for the whole country. Every day, Tourist and Excursion Centre of PSU provides captivating tours for the guests that are willing to learn more about Polotsk history and education traditions.

Rich historical past and atmosphere of the building don’t hinder the faculty to move forward and develop modern directions. Along with all the modern facilities, there is also a VR-laboratory. It allows the students to work with virtual reality during their studies. What’s more, PSU is the first university in the country that has its own VR-laboratory.

Besides programming languages, future information security specialists have to know the English language, that no one can do without in the modern world. Advanced knowledge of foreign languages is essential in all spheres of activity. For PSU students to be competitive in the labour market and any employer was interested in them, the Centre for Foreign Languages Study was created at PSU. During the first double class any student of the university can study foreign languages with the help of brilliant teachers of the Centre.
