In philosophy, there is a concept of positive unity – a complex system is effective if all its components work to mutually strengthen each other. And Truth, Kindness and Beauty are absolute values. This concept became the basis for the development of Euphrosyne Polotskaya State University of Polotsk.

The university is the successor of the glorious deeds of its predecessors, the successor of the millennial history of education of Polotsk land. The world got a lot of outstanding figures from Polotsk. The name of Euphrosyne Polotskaya, her life path and achievements are of special significance. The saint carried out a noble mission of enlightenment in the name of eternal values, laying a solid foundation for the formation of a spiritually rich, educated Belarus.

At the beginning of the 12th century, Euphrosyne founded monasteries for women and men, which became the center of education of the Polotsk Principality. In 1581, the Jesuit Collegium was opened in Polotsk, and in 1812 Polotsk Jesuit Academy was established, the first higher educational institution in the territory of modern Belarus. In 1835, Polotsk Cadet Campus was established, whose graduates became famous for heroic military exploits, important scientific discoveries, and bright social successes.

The modern history of the university began in 1968, when a branch of the Belarusian Order of the Red Banner of the Polytechnic Institute was opened in Novopolotsk. In 1974, the branch was transformed into Novopolotsk Polytechnic Institute, which in 1993 became Polotsk State University. In 2022, the university acquired the name of Euphrosyne Polotskaya.

The main points of the rich history of Euphrosyne Polotskaya State University of Polotsk are seen in its symbols. The national anthem of the university was created in 2003, and the emblem and flag of the university were established by the decision of the University Council on January 25, 2008.

The emblem of PSU

The emblem of Euphrosyne Polotskaya State University of Polotsk is a stylized image of an open book inside a blue hexagon. The outline of the open book means the continuation of the educational traditions laid down by Euphrosyne Polotskaya, Francysk Skaryna and Simeon Polotsky. On the front page of the book there is a graphic image of the buildings of Polotsk Jesuit Collegium, which symbolizes the origins of the university from the first higher educational institution in Polotsk.

Above the image of the collegium is the inscription DOCENDO DISCIMUS. The meaning of the phrase reveals the continuous process of self-education – while teaching I learn. The date 1581 is the year when the first stone was laid in the building of the Jesuit Collegium. Along the perimeter of the hexagon on a blue ribbon is an inscription in Russian ‘Euphrosyne Polotskaya State University of Polotsk’.

The hexagon is crowned with a silver crown with a gold pommel, which is a stylized image of the coupling of two toothed gears as a sign of one of the first faculties, Faculty of Mechanics and Engineering. The lower gear is silver, the upper gear is gold. This combination reveals the interaction of the nobility and purity of scientific thoughts with the centuries-old tradition of education in Polotsk.

The blue ribbon represents the benzene ring, and the blue color represents the blue threads of the gas pipeline. These are symbols of the industries in Novopolotsk, for the development of which the first faculties of the future Polotsk State University were founded in 1968.

The flag of PSU

The flag of Euphrosyne Polotskaya State University of Polotsk is vertically divided into three equal parts. Two of them are blue, located at the edges; and the central one is white. The blue color is a symbol of science and scholarship, as well as the oil and gas industry of the region, while the white color symbolizes the purity of scientific thoughts, teaching and self-study. The university emblem is placed in the center of the flag.
